Stuart Holmes flying Gin Glider's Yak off Ama Dablam, Novemeber 2009.
Here's a short movie of Stuart's climb on Ama Dablam in Nepal and of his flight from the summit using the new GIN GLIDERS YAK 16.5
An ascent of the iconic Nepalese mountain Ama Dablam by Stuart Holmes (ably supported by the very capable Tim Mosedale (www.timmosedale.co.uk)) followed by the first ever descent by Speed Glider. The Yak 16.5 made by Gin Gliders weighs only 2.3kg, that's less than 3 kg total weight including harness. This type of wing made take off relatively easy in difficult gusty conditions giving a descent of just 10 minutes, thereby saving a day and a half of down-climbing.

After-Work-Hike & Fly of the NOVA Team
Philipp Medicus (Head of R&D), Luis Depping (Product Manager Harnesses) and Paul Nagl (Service Manager and flying with the helmet camera) fly with their BANTAMs from the Bettelwurf after work. The Bettelwurf is a mountain in the Karwendel range, not far from the NOVA headquarters in Terfens and outside the core zone of the nature reserve. Attention: clearance from the tower of Innsbruck Airport is mandatory before take-off.

When the wind is light, it's always tricky to know when/if to push to takeoff or if you're better off waiting.
Because we don't have thermals where we fly I like to use the wing as my own wind meter.
This is because putting the wing up above your head you get an instant feel to how much tension there is on the lines, and you can guess if you'll be able to stay aloft or not.
I find this method to be more reliable than a pure windspeed meter (anemometer) because most meters will tell you average wind speed but only magnitude, no direction. Meaning with 30km/h wind you can have zero lift if the wind is coming in horizontal, or you can have loads of lift if the wind has a strong vertical component, so best way I find is to put the wing up and have a feel.
In this video I had to wait quite a bit for the wind to pick up and the flyable was quite narrow, but in the end paid off. Also if you're having fun on takeoff anyway waiting time goes by faster :)

We've moved to Portugal over a year ago and even though we've been to this beach dozens of times Gemma has never been able to fly it as it's very technical and small, especially with traffic.
So it was great to see that on this day, without warning and with perfect conditions she just tried it one again and it worked! She managed to work the lift in such a way to stay up for a long time!

All in all, for our style of flying I think it really suits us better being an "in-between size" especially since we get quite a few days here at the coast which are just a little too strong for full size wings.
