We had just finished filming from the day and the wind was picking up, but in the corner of my eye I caught this wall that seemed to be well aligned into the wind.
When we got closer we realised it was quite off to the wind actually but still decided to give it a go. After a few tried I actually managed to slowly make my way up and go from the beach all the way up to the top of the ridge about 70 meters up!

With lots of practise on a given physical activity comes muscle memory and lots of reactions that become second nature. However trying to explain how and why some things happen the way they do to other people can be quite hard.
On this one I try to give my thoughts on the secondary brake (other brake, outside brake, counter-steering, etc) in paragliding when groundhandling.
The conditions weren't great but I think that worked to our advantage as gusting wind makes the wing hang back and shoot more, helping demonstrate why it is important to understand the role of both brakes.

In this video I go through the thought process for creating the sensors for my uncollapsible paraglider project.
I attached strain gauges on the maillons. This means that as the lines pull the maillons they get stressed and as this happens they get stretched slightly.
The strain gauges will stretch with the maillon and this causes the resistance of the strain gauge to change slightly.
In my next video I'll try to build a system that can read this change in resistance to calculate the tension on the maillons.
Thank you to Sheffield University for all the support

Florida doesn't have many hills, so if you want to fly a paraglider a motor comes in very handy!
We visited on the of the best schools in the country to see first hand what PPG is all about and we were amazed.
The people at Aviator PPG are amazing and it rubs off on their students and everyone that interacts with them.

I've been waiting to try to throw launching for a little while so as we finally got a windy day I thought I'd give it a go.
With the right conditions it's possible but as with everything in paragliding it's a case of being patient and practicing a lot. I managed to do it (just) a couple of times but unfortunately when Gemma tried it the wind had died down quite a bit.
Takeaways where have the wing as neat as possible. Mind how close to the wing you grab the lines. And if you don't have gale-force winds run back after you throw to get tension to the lines before it hits the ground.

After two weeks of storms and bad weather we've finally had a great day here in the Peak District.
A lot of good pilots say that you learn more in an hour groundhandling than in an hour flying. If you do it enough you can just feel what you wing in going instead of looking at it.
I've always wondered what would happen if you tried to groundhandled blindfolded, so today I found out!
Worked surprisingly better than I expected and with the lack of vision you brain does draw more from the other senses. I was hearing more and feeling more through the risers, harness and brake lines.
Wings that you can fly Blindfolded :)

I've seen people twist around when flying to look backwards or just for fun and I've been wanting to try that move.
Well this day was the day. The ridge was almost empty, there was plenty of smooth lift and a safe wing and this is what I found.
It takes a considerable amount of force to get twisted half a turn and to stay twisted. As soon as you let go of the risers the wing wants to spring you back to your normal position immediately!
However if you go for the full turn or more that untwisting force is much smaller and it's harder to get out of it. In a controlled environment I think it's really good to try these things as you learn what to expect in an emergency.

The weather was quite changeable so we started with one plan but ended up with another.
All in all it was a great session for Gemma to get used to and slowly getting comfortable groundhandling on takeoff and the challenges that come with it.
In the end she even managed a couple little flights :)
Merry Xmas everyone

Antoine Girard has flown his paraglider to 8,150m+ soaring Broad Peak in Pakistan's Himalayas on the 23rd of July 2016.
He is one of the most understated legends of our sport and last week at the Kendal Mountain Festival I managed to interview him with the great help from Ed Ewing, Editor for xcmag.com

I fly paragliders but never really look at paragliders. I mean I see the lines and cloth and shapes and tabs and all that but I don't, and think most people don't, really really look at a paraglider.
It's an amazing design feat that allows us to soar and cover great distances yet we kind of take it for granted, like a car or a road.
In this impromptu video series I'd like to take the task of designing and building a paraglider, from scratch.
To do that, I plan to take a journey, from the very simple shape of a rectangle of paper, all the way to a full-size man-flying paraglider.
No idea what the road ahead looks like, but I thought it would be a good idea to start small and simple, with paper to try to find out how it can be shaped to bend in two different directions, and what the various factors and parameters might influence.
