Preflight checks are something every pilot should do before every flight. This particular system is how I learnt in the UK as the BHPA system but can be easily adapted and translated if you don't have one.

The forecast was supposed to be too strong, we got there and it was too weak and from the complete wrong direction!

So Gemma spotted some kite surfers near by in the lagoon and decided to walk over to investigate! Looked like a lot of fun! :)

On Sunday the 15th of July 2018 Richard Carter flew the first 300+km in the UK by paraglider.

Richard is a local pilot and friend so I thought I would grab a quick interview with him and learn all about how he got into paragliding.

The early flights, the first 1.4km cross country and even his first British record at 42km. And then fast forward to an impressive resume of holding the UK record 8 times and including the first one to fly 100km, 100 miles, 200km, and now the coveted 300km.

An amazing person, a talented pilot and what a story. I was trying to keep it cool but had a grin from ear to ear during the whole interview. A true pleasure :)

Passive chasecams wobble quite a bit and 3axis gimbals are a bit too expensive and fragile so I thought I would build a prototype of a chasecam that would be mechanically stabilized using an IMU and some servos connected to control surfaces whilst still being rugged.

Worked kind of ok but to test it I would need to build one lighter, with a lot more drag and perhaps software that is more easily customizable. Still fun though :)

Today I made a Harmonograph!

Took me a couple of hours to build and learnt a few things about resonance, mass, inertia and friction.

The pens worked a lot better than the pencils and for sure I'll play with it again in the future.

It was A LOT of footage so need to be careful with that in the future. Because of that it took a bit too long to edit and around 1 hour to export and 1 hour to upload to YouTube. Oh the joys of 4K content!

We're finally in Portugal and the big move is done... sort of.

All our stuff is now in the country but we don't have a house yet. We spent the last week doing admin stuff and getting settled in. We now have a way to move around and an awesome project van that we hope to turn in a para-mobil :P

We fast-forwarded through normal groundhandling and spent some time groundhandling with the motor on our backs.

First with the motor turned off and after we got good enough and did some power runs without the wing (to get used to the throttle) we put it all together with some taxiing.

The wind was just perfect to launch and land, so Gemma finally worked up the courage to break her flying lull and get in some take off and landing practice.
The takeoff was a bit busy at times but it worked great to get her confidence back and getting to enjoy being up there.

As paraglider pilots, we've all been feeling how hard it is to stay at home all this time, so we though that our first flight back after lockdown has been lifted would be very special.

Well, turns our it was very special indeed. Flew together with Gemma, the day was beautiful and the lift was strong, making flying easy and the views amazing.

Classic yearly tradition of carving up some pumpkins. I always feel silly carving something that is "spooky" or "scary" so I ended up turning it into an engineering project! ahah.

I think they turned out ok :) not brilliant but not terrible either. It's funny how even a poorly carved pumpkin look much better when you yurn the lights of and light a candle inside :)

My friend Dave "3D" Allen was kind enough to print the ship for me and then I went through as much sanding and weathering as I could and layering the coats on.

In the end it turned out OK but I'd for sure like to do this again and try to do it better.
