THEO DE BLIC’S TUTORIAL: STEEP SPIRAL

The steep spiral is always hotly debated: dangerous or not? Fact is: it is a highly effective descent manoeuvre. No other technique allows such high sink rates as a proper steep spiral. But you also have to master it!
In this video, Theo de Blic demonstrates with an ION 6 what needs to be considered in order to fly a spiral safely – from the initiation to the sink rate control to the exit. And above all: which dangers to avoid.

Die Steilspirale wird immer wieder heiß diskutiert: gefährlich oder nicht? Fakt: sie ist ein höchst effektives Abstiegsmanöver. Keine andere Technik erlaubt so hohe Sinkwerte wie eine Steilspirale. Aber man sie eben auch beherrschen!
In diesem Video zeigt Theo de Blic mit einem ION 6, was es zu beachten gilt, um eine Spirale sicher zu fliegen – von der Einleitung über die Kontrolle der Sinkgeschwindigkeit bis hin zur Ausleitung. Und vor allem: welche Gefahren es zu vermeiden gilt.

I love the BGD Seed. It's a scaled down Epic and was designed as a groundhandling wing but built well like any other BGD wing.

So, since I've groundhandled it for over 100 hours and in that time had the chance to have little hops that turned into little flights getting progressively bigger, as the wind was right I thought it was good opportunity to try and actually soar it.

I've done it before, but not on camera, and because it's small and the lines are short, it is super agile. Flies fast (I'm 90kg and it is 14sqmt) and rolls and dives a lot when turning, even with very light input, making it mega fun to fly.

It was quite easy to top land with it. It carries a lot of energy through the turn, meaning you will lose height when it dives to turn but you do recover most of it as you come out of the turn.

I've landed it before in near nil wind and it flares fine, and on this day there was a lot more wind that than so landing was super smooth and pretty much came down vertical.

All in all a really fun experience! Might need to get a proper speed wing :)
