I've had a super cheap very old wing for groundhandling since I started flying a few years ago. For me it was both a good and bad idea at the time, knowing what I know now.

So we decided to try it out with Gemma. The wing was really difficult to groundhandle but she made it look easy(ish). We ended up concluding that if you are a die-hard groundhandler it might be worth it but if you are just an occasional pilot you're probably better off groundhandling the wing you will be flying.

Ozone was kind enough to send us a Rapi-dos 15m speedwing so that we can fly in more wind conditions (Thanks Matt!). So this was the first time we got to try it.

Gemma and I decided to groundhandle it first to get a feel for the wing and then progressively get into stronger and stronger wind.

It's a very fun wing to fly but the sensations and feel of flying it are for sure very different to paragliding. Also feels like it requires quite a different style of flying so I'm looking forward to flying it more in the future :)

While our friend Olaf was here we had the chance to try his Apco Hybrid paraglider.

It's has a really interesting design, being half double skin, half single skin, that definitely gives it a particular feel.

Gemma and I got to groundhandle it and fly it and found it quite fun and responsive. Definitely is a tool for the right job rather than one for everything but very pleasant none the less :)

Hard to tell the exact wind strenght but it might have been around 35-45km/h
So we decided it was too much for Gemma because of experience and weight.

So I had a go and it was quite top end for me. Despite the wind noise and effort from pushing into wind I tried to give some reasons why I do things the way I do. Hope it was helpful to someone :)

I've been wanting to do this for a while as hovering is one of my favourite things to do with a paraglider.

It allows you to explore the world around you like a little bird and transition between forward and backwards flight and reach places and do things that you couldn't otherwise. It's awesome.

In our pursuit to find "the flight line" we ended up doing loads more flying passes lower and lower to see if we could scratch our way out of it.

I also share some tips on how to maximize flights, by going to minimum sink position when in light lift, and turning in lift rather than flying past it.

Really good fun and good practice to get the skills for those scratchy days!

With lots of practise on a given physical activity comes muscle memory and lots of reactions that become second nature. However trying to explain how and why some things happen the way they do to other people can be quite hard.

On this one I try to give my thoughts on the secondary brake (other brake, outside brake, counter-steering, etc) in paragliding when groundhandling.

The conditions weren't great but I think that worked to our advantage as gusting wind makes the wing hang back and shoot more, helping demonstrate why it is important to understand the role of both brakes.

I'm finally back to flying High B wings and though I'd give you my first impressions of the Ozone Swift 5. I'm flying the ML size and it feels really nice.

If you're coming from an A or low B, most noticeable will be the glide performance and slightly different groundhandlability. Also the brake pressure is quite different with shorter brake travel too, so if you're heavy handed be careful.

All is all it's a lovely wing, with the same design as the Rush 5 but with lightweight materials, which is really nice.

After two years of study, and over 140 deployments in a zipline and in rotations up to 4 G, here are the findings from Dr Matt Wilkes and the Free Flight Physiology Project. Watch the video for their recommendations to improve reserve parachute systems and training.
